Next meeting on 20th November

Autumn is slipping into winter and the nights seem long and cold but the Pentrich Historical Society is still pressing on with its new season. At our next meeting, our speaker will be Michael-Le-Baigue from Chesterfield with his talk entitled 'Derbyshire's accents and dialects'. He will focus on the historical, political and geographical factors which have shaped the way native people in Derbyshire talk. At a time when the old 'R.P' way of talking is no longer considered as the standard pronunciation and local accents are taking on a new importance, this is an especially relevant topic.

Tea and coffee are provided and I have it on good authority that there will also be a home-made cake. We are always happy to see new faces so if you have an interest in history or are simply keen to try something different, please join us. We will next meet on Tuesday 20th November at 7:30pm at Pentrich Village Hall. There is plenty of parking outside our meeting venue and the entrance charge is 2£ per person. Hope to see you there!

Historical Society Season 2010/11

Pentrich is a small village between Alfreton and Belper in Derbyshire its claim to fame being the site of the last revolution in England in 1817.  Following the end of the Napoleonic war the poor were in a very distressed state
and a misguided group of villagers took up arms to overthrow the government.  The uprising under the leadership of Jeremiah Brandreth was to include thousands of men from other counties but the few who set off from Pentrich were the only ones on the march.  On reaching the Derbyshire-Nottingham border they were routed by a group of Hussars.
After a much publicised show trial in Derby the the three ring leaders were found guilty of high treason and were executed.  Fourteen others were transported to Australia.

The Historical Soc meets on the third Tuesday of the month except July and August and the meetings take place in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.
